Compact Recording/SR Mixer (Electronics) Superb engineering at a very reasonable price is what I thought after using and testing the Mackie 1202. I work in a physics lab to which I took this mixer to see if it will perform to the level Mackie claims. To my surprise, mine exceeds Mackie's specifications: for example, they claim a very low 0.0007% distortion and linear response to 60000 cycles, mine far exceeds those specifications (measured on lab quality equipment). I also have a small home recording studio and work, part time, as a DJ and play in a small band. I needed a mixer with very low distortion, without costing a fortune, for my home studio and capable of handling mobile DJ work (MP3 from a computer) and work with a band as well so that is why I selected this unit. It is not specifically aimed at the DJ market-no cross fader-but works quite well with only a little bit of practice. My first problem was 3 live mics and one reverse channel mic going to an earbud that I'm wearing as the groom. That's reserved for me to listen to the audio mix and signal the videographer to adjust things or for the videographer to light up a lightpole and signal me that he's having problems, and to take me out out the mix (mix minus) so that he can hear me in his headphones and I can hear his dedicated mic (mic #4). (I'm using an IEM wireless to monitor the audio and he can insert his comments into the IEM without driving the house mics with them in the church) Where did mics 1,2,and 3 go? Compact Recording/SR Mixer (Electronics) I own the original Mackie 1202-VLZ and after comparing it with the VLZ3 I can tell you the differences between the two are very minimal. I say this as a good thing because my good old 1202 has been a loyal and reliable mixer for me since the early 90's. The sound on my mixer is still amazing. The amplification is super quiet, which means no worrying about pumping up the volume only to hear more static noise. The knobs and buttons are studio grade, which means they have just the right amount of tension and feel just as smooth as the day I bought it. For all the basic mixing needs the Mackie delivers and then some.It's funny how the extra features on some mixers tend to degrade the quality. I used a Behringer Eurorack that is just as quiet as my Mackie on the surface. However when you use the included effects processor the noise level goes from professional quality to garage band levels of fidelity.
